Planning for Parent-Child Interaction (PCI) Observation
Requirement
For all MIECHV families, a Parent-Child Interaction (PCI) observation is required once a year for each family with an age eligible child using an approved tool.

All index children between 3 months and 48 months.
Which tool do I use:
Kansas MIECHV has approved the PICCOLO and the CHEERS as tools for the PCI requirement.
Where to report
The DAISEY Kansas MIECHV Child Activity – date of activity should reflect the home visit in which the PCI was conducted.
When should PCI observations be conducted?
- Conduct one PCI observation annually, within the MIECHV reporting period of October 1 to September 30, for all index children between 3 months and 48 months.
- PCI observations are not required from the birth up to the child’s 3-month birthday. Observations completed prior to the child’s 3-month birthday or after the child turns 48 months will not be counted as this is outside of the required window.
- Please refer to the DAISEY Scheduling Report for specific eligibility dates for each child.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: I’ve assessed the child, why don’t I see the scores in DAISEY?
Answer: PCI observations will start appearing in the Scheduling Report within the reporting period when the child turns 3 months old.
Note: If a PCI observation is conducted prior to the child’s 3-month birthday, that observation will not be counted as a completed observation. Another observation will need to be conducted once the child turns 3 months old.
Q: What if the child turns 4 years old (48 months) during the reporting period?
A: Let’s consider an example where the child turns 4 years old on February 15th. In this example, the child is eligible for a PCI observation from October 1st (the beginning of the reporting period) until February 14th (the end of the eligibility window for that specific child).
Q: What if my program has different guidelines for when I complete the PCI?
A: You may complete the MIECHV PCI observation at any time during the eligibility period. If a PCI observation is not completed during the eligibility window as outlined, it will be designated as “missed.” Your program may use more than one tool to access parent-child interaction quality, but DAISEY only requires that a PCI observation using a validated and approved tool be reported.
Q: If there is more than one child in the home, do I have to report a PCI for each child?
A: Kansas MIECHV only allows one age-eligible index child be enrolled per household at a time. Only report in DAISEY the PCI conducted with the index child. If you have additional questions about multiple-child households, please refer to the Index Child policy in the Kansas MIECHV Operations Manual.
